Influenced by the trends of the old continent, the United States struggled to forge their own musical identity. It wasn’t until the beginning of the 20th century that Gershwin, Ives and Copland achieved this ambition, followed in the 1960s by Bernstein and the representatives of the minimalist movement. Repetitions, loops, cells, phasing and dephasing underpinned the artistic reflection and creative processes of artists such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk and John Adams. Sixty years later, this musical universe has never been so topical, featuring in pop music, soundtracks and commercials. The new generation has appropriated its codes, reinterpreting them endlessly, as evidenced by Vanessa Wagner and Wilhem Latchoumia. This is America!
