Resonances, echoes, tributes… Each note in this programme has been as if revealed by several hands. Behind Caroline Shaw’s Entr’Act, there is a minuet by Haydn; Osvaldo Golijov’s Las Muertes del Angel echoes Astor Piazzolla’s Milonga del Angel; Felix Mendelssohn’s Quartet in F minor is a constant reminder of his sister Fanny, who died shortly before it was composed – not to mention Julian Azkoul’s arrangement for string orchestra which is superimposed on the work originally written for a string quartet and Peteris Vasks’ Viatore in tribute to Arvo Pärt. Finally the concert will end with Leopold Stokowski’s arrangement of Henry Purcell’s Lamento of Dido. The magic lies in what unites these works: the beauty and emotional intensity of string instruments!
