“Magnificat anima mea Dominum/My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord!”The impassioned text of the Canticle of Mary has inspired composers, both Catholic and Reformed. The latter also had recourse to Luther’s version Meine Seele erhebt den Herren and its famous melody, which shines through to the heart of Mozart’s Requiem. This melody runs through Bach’s cantata BWV 10 and hovers in the Suscepit Israel of the Magnificat BWV 243. In the 17th century, Schütz used polychorality to enhance the text, while Rosenmüller wrapped it in Italian-like lightness, and in 1989, Arvo Pärt wrote a profound meditation for six voices a cappella.
