The ostinato – a motif or phrase that is repeated throughout a musical composition – is one of the hallmarks of Baroque music. It is often this, rather than the text, which sets up the emotional character of a musical piece. Who wouldn’t immediately recognise the lamento in Purcell’s Dido by its chromatic descent that is persistently repeated like tears running down a cheek? Who could resist the temptation to tap their foot when listening to the chaconne from Monteverdi’s Zefiro Torna? The Chiome d’Oro ensemble will use these different Baroque motifs to cross geographical and temporal boundaries, interspersing Baroque compositions with popular and contemporary works, all based on the same principle of ostinato. Indeed, the greatest musicians, whatever their age or background, know this: why deprive yourself of a formula that works?

Chairs will be available for this concert. Please note that quantities are limited!
